This Cherry Hill Gate Engagement session was one of the most relaxed and stress-free photo shoots from last year’s fall season. Although we had to reschedule several times due to weather challenges, the day turned out perfect, with great weather and stunning fall colours for Joanna and Matt’s Cherry Hill Gate Engagement photos.
Discovering Cherry Hill Gate
Months before this session, my wife, Stephane, had suggested that I should visit Cherry Hill Gate, part of the Royal Botanical Gardens. While I had photographed engagements at Hendrie Park, the Greenhouse, and the Rock Garden, this was my first time exploring Cherry Hill Gate and the Hendrie Valley Sanctuary. Thanks to Joanna and Matt, who suggested this location, we had the chance to visit this place and, at the same time, realize what I was missing all this time.
Joanna and Matt frequently visit this place, enjoying the wildlife and feeding chipmunks and birds. Each time they come, they bring treats and seeds for the animals and venture deep into the forest, exploring the wildlife and relaxing from all the noise and busyness that our daytime activities bring. As educators, they deeply value these peaceful moments, something I understand well through my wife’s experiences in the same field.
Finding the location can be tricky, as parking is limited. When we arrived, the tiny parking lot was packed. I could see Joanna feeling nervous because she worried we would lose the time for our session. However, I reassured them we would find parking and capture amazing photos.
Since my engagement sessions typically last around two hours, I never strictly watch the clock and often shoot beyond that time. Reassuring them that we’d find parking and capture some amazing shots, I noticed they began to relax. Now, it was time for them to let their guard down and truly enjoy the experience.
Easing into the Cherry Hill Engagement Session
Working with couples who haven’t had professional photos taken before can feel overwhelming for both sides. By reading their body language, I give them time to settle into the session’s atmosphere. Photographing from a distance helps them relax, and showing them some of the initial shots builds their confidence. Gradually, they begin to let their guard down and step outside their comfort zone. This approach worked perfectly for their Cherry Hill Gate Engagement, allowing us to create authentic, meaningful images.
As Joanna and Matt grew comfortable, I suggested we cross the street into Cherry Hill Gate, deep within the Hendrie Valley Sanctuary. We had started working on the other side of the park, where there was a lovely pond with a large steel bridge and beautiful light illuminating this area. Here, we took charming photos featuring pumpkins with Mr and Mrs labels that would be significant in their wedding day decorations for their head table. Having photographed their wedding just last month, I wanted to introduce this Cherry Hill Gate Engagement session before sharing their wedding day photos.
Capturing Unscripted Moments
As soon as we entered the Cherry Hill Gate trail, I noticed the abundance of wildlife. I wanted to capture some natural, candid moments, so I asked Joanna and Matt to feed the animals as they normally do during their visits here. I positioned myself at a distance, staying out of sight, getting ready to capture some cute local animals.
Once they scattered seeds and nuts, the first visitors were the chipmunks. These little creatures, completely at ease in their environment, eagerly approached Joanna and Matt, stuffing their cheeks with as many nuts as they could carry. After some time playing with the chipmunks, Joanna and Matt stood opposite each other, their hands overlapping and filled with seeds. Soon, birds flew in to take advantage of the treat, and I captured some charming photos before we continued further along the trail.
Cherry Hill Engagement During Golden Hour
We had strategically started the session at 2 p.m. to take advantage of the sunlight and vibrant colours, gradually approaching the golden hour around 4 p.m. in the fall. As the session progressed, I hoped to capture some stunning sunset shots if the conditions were right.
As we stepped onto the boardwalk, so many creative ideas came to mind. I was already envisioning the next shots, planning a few steps ahead. Joanna and Matt brought along hot chocolate and coffee, so I captured some adorable moments with their custom-made cups and cozy blankets. The atmosphere was perfect, and they felt completely at ease by this point. I observed, occasionally asked for a new position, and captured their genuine interactions, which beautifully reflected their connection.
We stopped frequently to take photos, each spot showcasing the incredible fall colours. One particular location stood out—an alone bench on the boardwalk crossing a pond. As we approached, I asked them to walk ahead while I stayed back, noticing how Joanna’s sweater perfectly complemented the surrounding foliage. Against the backdrop of green water, the scene felt peaceful and serene. I chose poses that reflected this calm atmosphere, enhancing the natural beauty of the moment.
Sunset and Final Cherry Hill Engagement Reflections
As the sun began to set, we made our way back toward the parking area. I wanted to see if the sunset would be visible from the boardwalk, and I was thrilled when I noticed that there would be a fantastic sunset. Earlier in the day, it was windy, and the sky and all those clouds were red with striking shades of vibrant colour. We paused to capture some intimate and magical sunset and twilight shots.
I wanted to highlight both the stunning location and the genuine connection between Joanna and Matt in these final Cherry Hill Gate Engagement photos. After capturing the last shot, we realized it had become almost entirely dark, with no streetlights or other light sources around.
A Memorable Conclusion
As we slowly made our way back to the cars, I noticed their tired but joyful expressions and the way they looked at each other, filled with warmth and contentment. It was clear we had created something special together. I felt grateful to have connected so well with them and captured moments they would treasure for years to come.
Reflecting on their wedding last month, I can confidently say that this Cherry Hill Gate Engagement session was the perfect beginning to our journey together. It served as an ideal rehearsal for their big day, and I’m genuinely excited to share their wedding photos in the coming months.
