On this day in Quinte West it was an unseasonably cold day. It may have been the end of October but, the weather resembled what we normally experience in the middle of January, minus the snow. The leaves on the trees were scarce and the ground was muddy – not the best conditions for photos but, nothing stops us! We were able to find some great locations within the Belleville Waterfront Trail using not just the grass (which was wet) but the rocks, a bridge, the trees, a picnic table and the dock. The options were endless.
When booking Fall photos in Ontario your first thought might be to choose a location that has a tonne of maple trees and red oaks to take advantage of the colours they produce this time of year. But really, that’s not necessary. Any yellow or brown hues and a hint of red in one tree, a small pile of leaves or even one bush will do! While a large landscape with various colours of dry leaves is great for a scenic shot, you don’t want anything distracting from a close-up shot of your family anyway. Just a touch of colour goes a long way.
Erin and her family came to their photo session dressed fashionably for their Fall photos. Their little girl wore a red shirt that was highlighted against the muted tones of grey and green in her parents’ and younger brother’s attire. The combination of colours in their clothing and the natural background makes for an image of their family that pops off the page.
For a Kindergartner and a girl in Grade 2, Erin’s children are experienced in the professional photo shoot arena and were very cooperative despite the cold temps. Her little girl was especially chilly but, hung in there the whole time with a positive attitude and smiled perfectly for every photo. She held her little shoulders up to try and keep herself warm and it ended up creating an adorable image.
The love Erin and her husband have for one another and their two children is evident in every image I took of them. They were a fun couple to work with. They weren’t afraid to laugh at themselves and at me saying “Heeeelllloooo!” Which is my trademark way of getting my subject’s attention and making them smile. It works every time.
At the end of the session my assistant Jenn, gave the kids some Hallowe’en treats and fun glasses to wear. The kids did a fantastic job for us on this day and they deserved a little treat for their hard work… But, mostly for braving the cold!
