Guelph Winter Engagement Photos with Taylor and Dominic

For this Guelph Winter Engagement photo session, we explored several local spots that capture the charm of Guelph and highlight the stunning winter photo opportunities near my Guelph photo studio. After I shared a few location suggestions with Taylor and Dominic, they chose the ones that best represented their vision for a winter engagement session, creating a perfect showcase of Guelph’s beauty.

How We Started Planning this Guelph Winter Engagement

I’ve already shared my love for winter photo sessions, along with the pros and cons of capturing photos in this season. Over the years, I’ve developed a tried-and-true formula for creating stunning winter images, and I shared these tips with Taylor and Dominic.

The key to great winter photos lies in a combination of timing, the month, and the outdoor temperature. February is my favourite month for winter engagement sessions. I aim for sunny days with fresh snow on the ground, ideally 24–36 hours after the snowfall has stopped.

The temperature sweet spot is between -7°C and -10°C. This range is crucial—warmer temperatures can lead to slushy snow that’s wet and uncomfortable. On the other hand, colder temperatures can make it difficult for clients to enjoy the session or switch outfits.

We also plan for minimal wind; even a light breeze can make it feel colder and less comfortable. Aligning all these factors with everyone’s schedules can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. Flexibility is key, so we schedule sessions on short notice—about 48 hours in advance—while closely monitoring these conditions to ensure everything comes together perfectly.

When the forecast finally showed the perfect day we’d been waiting for, we scheduled Taylor and Dominic’s Guelph Winter Engagement session. Dominic had a specific vision: a forest with tall trees and perfect leading lines blanketed in fresh snow to create a winter wonderland.

As a local photographer in Guelph, I knew just the spot to bring his vision to life. We met near Kortright Woods Trail, a quiet residential area with a small pedestrian path leading into Hanlon Park.

Taylor and Dominic arrived feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness—excited for the session but a bit apprehensive about the unknown and the pressure of engagement photos. We began around 11 a.m., aiming to wrap up by 1 p.m. or slightly later, as this was the warmest time of day for a February session.

The sun alternated between shining and hiding behind clouds, creating ideal overcast lighting for photographing the snow-covered landscape. To help them relax, I asked them to walk away from me and interact naturally while I captured candid moments from a distance. Slowly but surely, they settled into the session.

Taylor took the lead in creating an unposed, candid vibe, with Dominic responding perfectly—showering her with warm hugs, smiles, and kisses. The location, sheltered from the light wind and completely undisturbed by others, allowed us to capture some truly stunning photos that reflected their love and the magic of a Guelph winter.

Guelph Winter Engagement at Hanlon Creek

Our next stop was the other side of Preservation Park, near Hanlon Creek. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to capture here, and it was exciting to dive into photographing this location. By this point, Taylor and Dominic had made a few outfit changes, and we started walking deeper into the park.

This area was distinct—its leafless trees and open sky created the perfect setting for high-key lighting photos. The fallen trees, dusted with fresh snow, provided a stunning backdrop, while the bright sunshine allowed me to capture an entirely different mood compared to the earlier shots at Kortright Woods Trail.

As Taylor and Dominic grew more comfortable, their ease and connection shone through in the photos, making them even more unique and special. I loved how their growing confidence added depth and character to each image.

Although I could have spent much longer here, I kept an eye on the sunlight, knowing we needed to make it to the final two locations. I wanted to ensure this Guelph Winter Engagement session remained one of a kind, with a variety of beautiful settings and moments to cherish.

Photo Session at Goldie Mill Ruins in Winter

Our third location of the day was the Goldie Mill Ruins, just a short walk from downtown Guelph. For this part of the session, Taylor and Dominic changed into outfits that perfectly complemented the setting.

Although I’ve photographed fall sessions here before, this was my first time capturing the ruins in winter. Their choice of solid, eye-pleasing colours blended beautifully with the architecture of the ruins, enhanced by the pristine layer of fresh snow on the ground.

Since we scheduled the session for a weekday, the location was completely empty—no crowds, no distractions, and not even footprints in the snow. This serene atmosphere set the stage for some of the most intimate photos of their engagement session.

The overcast but bright sky was ideal, allowing me to shoot from any angle within the ruins. Using the dramatic lines and textures of Goldie Mill’s architecture, I captured dynamic and artistic perspectives, adding depth and variety to their collection of engagement photos. This stop truly elevated the session, making their memories even more unique.

Winter Engagement Pictures at the University of Guelph Arboretum

I saved the best for last: our final stop was the University of Guelph Arboretum. As we arrived, I noticed the sun beginning to set, reducing the available light but still offering enough brightness to inspire some fresh ideas and creative approaches for their engagement session.

Being so close to the Arboretum, I know the best spots for every season of the year, and this winter day was no exception. By this point, Taylor and Dominic were completely at ease, effortlessly following directions and showcasing their love through every moment.

We started at the Arboretum’s entrance, capturing the beauty of this incredible location. It’s a true blessing to have such a picturesque setting within walking distance of my studio.

Taylor and Dominic’s Guelph Winter Engagement session demonstrated just how magical winter photos in this city can be. In my 25 years of photography, this session stands out for its variety of stunning locations, the couple’s natural connection, and the welcoming atmosphere of this unique community.

The variety of places, their look and the kindness of the people visiting are unique. I’m proud to call this city my town.
Thank you, Taylor and Dominic, for choosing this royal city to carry the memories of your lovely engagement session in winter.
