Family Photographer | Getting What You Want | On Location with Andrea and Family

Some times we know just what we want. When Andrea and Adam chose the location where they wanted their wedding photos taken, they had expectations of their photographer. While there are some experienced and well-trained photographers out there, unfortunately not every one can see your vision and understand what you want. We’re all human and we all make mistakes. Open communication with your photographer is the key to getting the type of images that best represent you and your loved ones. However, if you find out that your communication wasn’t spot on only after you’ve seen the final product, then make the most of it and move on. Or, as Andrea did, just revisit your wedding photo shoot location months or years later to take some photos of you, your husband and your ever-growing family.

Alton Mills, the location, Andrea and Adam chose for their family photo shoot is full of water falls, a creek, not to mention the maintained landscape. The Spring colours are abundant in this family’s images. The dark purples and bright yellows are magnificent contrasts to the blue sky and bright, green grass. Which is in ideal combination of colours to help this family’s portraits pop off the screen or print image.

Andrea’s son has gorgeous blue eyes that watched me like a hawk! He was a cautious young boy throughout the photo shoot and I can’t say that he trusted me at all at first. As these things usually go, he did end up opening up for me and letting me capture some beautiful shots of his adorable self. In these situations, the first thing I like to do is let the baby play without me doing anything but capturing candid shots here and there. I’m not in their face, I’m just a part of the background. A man with a camera. Once the baby opens up, we begin taking photos of the family together and then we finish with any of the more difficult poses. Images that will be amazing to capture if the stars align but, won’t disappoint me or my clients if they don’t turn out.

Babies play with the oddest of “toys” sometimes. In a baby’s world even a pair of sunglasses may be deemed a toy. Instead of taking Mom and Dad’s sunglasses away from her baby, Andrea let him play with the sunglasses and in that time, I was able to capture some memorable photos. We even took a fun sunglasses-filled photo of the whole family!

It’s hard to believe but, it’s been a whole year since this photo shoot. A lot has happened since then. A few weeks ago, Andrea gave birth to their second healthy baby! Having worked with Andrea and her husband about three times now, I’m really understanding what types of photos they like and how they work best in front of the camera. I look forward to each and every photo shoot with this beautiful family!
