For Kerry’s family photo session I was able to stay close to home and photograph in the picturesque Heart Lake Conservation Area.
Travelling across the GTA gives me plenty of inspiration as a photographer. I learn about new (to me) neighbourhoods, find new parks and outdoor spaces for taking photos and I meet so many new people. For Kerry’s family session however, I was able to stay close to home and photograph in the picturesque Heart Lake Conservation Area.
In the Heart of Heart Lake
If you live in Brampton, you know Heart Lake! It’s where we take the kids in the summer to play at the beach or to hike in the Fall when the leaves change colour. It’s also a great place for photo shoots. We’ve had a couple of great sessions at Heart Lake and I enjoy revisiting when the opportunity arises. The lake, forest and large rocks make great additions to the background of the photo and provide contrasting colours to highlight my subject – you!
Meet Kerry’s Latest Addition
Kerry and her family are celebrating the arrival of their new baby girl! She is a beauty with a little mouth that looks like it’s drawn into a cute little bow in her face. This newborn was super cooperative throughout the entire photo shoot. I don’t normally take newborn photos outdoors. Generally speaking, I take them inside the family home. The reason being, babies and their moms tend to feel more comfortable about the whole process at home. However, Kerry and her family were more than comfortable in Heart Lake, outdoors in the sunshine and warm weather. Her newborn even looked comfortable lying on a cosy blanket positioned perfectly on a tree stump in the forest.
Rough and Tumble Toddler
Kerry’s young boy was a blast to work with. Sure, he was much more interested in playing with leaves and rocks than posing with his family, but he was having a good time. I loved capturing his fun-loving nature through the lens. At first, I followed him around and took photojournalistic style photos to capture the realness of this boy – his wonderment, his boundless energy. Then, as he wore off some of that energy, he was a little easier to work with when posing. I was even able to snap a few photos of him leaning in to kiss his little sister during a rare moment. Then, just as quick as kissed her, he was off to the races again!
And, We Meet Again
Having met and worked with Kerry, her husband and their son before means we already have a rapport built. This makes it much easier to start the photo shoot, especially with a newborn baby now on board. Their son was too young to remember me from our last session, but when he saw that his mom and dad were welcoming and warm with me, he was too.
Kerry and her son share one major feature, their eyes. The brilliant blue gives us a sense of peace that shines through their photos. How her husband says no to her or their son with those eyes, is beyond me! I look forward to photographing those blue eyes again when little sister is running around too.
