Children Photographer | From Babies to (Pre) Teens with Carolyn’s Kids

First off, I could not have asked for a better behind-the-scenes mom for helping with her kids’ photo shoot! Carolyn was fantastic and seasoned at gathering her three kids ages 12, 3 and 1 years old. The mere age difference between her kids could have made the whole photo shoot challenging. How do you pose 3 kids together who are such different ages? Then, the weather was a hinderance. Just as the photo shoot started, so did the rain. The story of one children photographer.

Working as a team Carolyn, my assistant Jenn and I pulled together to make the photo shoot a success! Her baby is at a point in her development where she loves her mama and not so much anyone else. So, Carolyn held onto her baby right up until it was time to snap a shot. She had her prepped, happy and ready to go. Plus, she stood close enough to her baby, sang and clapped to make her feel comfortable but, far enough away to stay out of the shot. This made my job 100 times easier!

Carolyn’s 3 year old son is a friend of my son’s. They don’t get to see each other often but, they took a trip to Canada’s Wonderland in the summer and hit it off immediately. This gorgeous boy didn’t like posing for the camera when we asked him to but, he came up with some unique and fun poses on his own. It was his idea to lean on the lights by the dock!

When you’re working with 3 kids with varying levels of patience, you need to first act quickly and second, be prepared. Once the rain hit, we parked ourselves under the roof of the park’s canteen, pulled up a picnic table and got to work. We were able to get the girls situated on the table for a few greats shots, then once Carolyn’s active 3-year old boy noticed that the girls were having fun on the table, he decided to join in. We propped him up, the camera clicked and just as fast as he jumped up on the table, he was off… Success!

Carolyn’s beautiful 12-year old daughter was easy to work with and could have posed for the camera all day! I had fun trying different posing and lighting techniques with her. I don’t always get the opportunity to use all the techniques I’ve learned, so photographing a pre-teen who is comfortable in front of the camera and able to follow directions was a pleasure.

The theme of the day? You can do anything, when you put your mind to it. When the rain started  we could have let it disrupt our photo session. We could have canceled or rescheduled. But, why do that? Instead, we were able to take possibly the most unique shots of the day.

“As mothers and daughters we are connected with one another. My mother is the bones of my spine, keeping me straight and true. She is my blood, making sure it runs rich and strong. She is the beating of my heart. I cannot now imagine a life without her.” ~  Kristin Hannah, Summer Island
