Elise Evans’s Family Portrait Session by DA Photography, Toronto, ON

Photographing large families seems challenging as there is such a flurry of activity as the bustle of everyday life weaves its way into one photograph. There is a quiet beauty amidst the excitement a large family brings to a photo session. The wonder lay in the way personalities of each family member take centre stage yet also leave room for others to share it.

Children have such a magical simplicity about them, which, when captured reminds you of what it was like to see so much of the world for the first time and how everything seemed endlessly exciting. One of the children, wise beyond their years, approached me and asked if they could have their photo taken, aside from the big group shots and all of the other cousins followed suit! The way each portrait was taken used the same technical skills but the eyes of each child revealed an incredibly distinct charisma that you knew all at once, would add a richness to the story they were beginning to write that will become their life.

If children are for cherishing, grandparents must be for revelling and that truth bloomed before the lens as grandmother Linda was unafraid to get down and play with the little ones. Hands on was not just a way to describe her interaction but as a means of being with her grandchildren. No story was considered insignificant and every opportunity to interact with them was a profound one, savoring every second of their smiles and laughter.
