Meaghan and Daniel’s engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment in Toronto was a beautiful combination of varied lighting conditions at one of Toronto’s most iconic architectural landmarks.
Starting with a careful plan based on what my couple wanted, selecting their outfits, and strategically choosing the timing of their photo session, we created an amazing engagement experience that tells the story of the love these two amazing people share.

How We Plan This Engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment
I connected with Daniel’s family back in 2017 when I photographed his sister’s wedding. While working at Jessica and Anthony’s wedding, I connected with the entire family, and since then, we have stayed in touch.
Their mom, Rose, has been one of the most active visitors on my Facebook and Instagram pages, and I have always been so thankful for her support. She reached out to me to request a photo session that she wanted to gift to the newly engaged couple.
Once Meaghan and Daniel received the gift certificate, Meaghan contacted me, and we started planning their engagement photo session. Meaghan already had a clear vision of what she wanted her photo session to look like. Most of the inspirational images she shared with me were from RC Harris Water Treatment in Toronto.
Having photographed many engagements at RC Harris Water Treatment before, I was excited to share some of my previously blogged photo sessions with Meaghan to see if my photography style aligned with her vision.
Since she received the gift certificate from someone who had already worked with me, it was important that we were on the same page about her likes and dislikes to make sure the photo session was exactly what she envisioned.
She loved the ideas I shared for her engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment in Toronto, and we locked in the location. For the season, she wanted summer, but not the middle of summer, so that we could avoid the extreme heat of a summer photo session.

The Versatility of This Iconic Architecture Location in Toronto
Having photographed many summer sessions, I suggested meeting around 5 pm and working from there. There were many reasons for this choice, but the most important ones were:
Starting at 5 pm helped us avoid the busiest time at the location, as many visitors leave for dinner around then. It also reduced our exposure to the heat and direct sunlight. Most importantly, it allowed us to work through multiple lighting scenarios that perfectly matched Meaghan’s ideas and needs for her engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment.
We met at the end of Nursewood Road, which leads to the local beach. I learned that Meaghan and Daniel had two outfits planned for their engagement session, and we decided to switch to the second outfit midway through the photo session.
Here, I shared my plan with my couple for their engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment.
Seeing the sun still high on the horizon, I knew I would be working mostly under direct sunlight during the first part of the session. I explained to them that I would be switching between shaded areas and direct sunlight throughout this part of the session.
From experience, I know that the first 30 minutes of a photo session are when we truly align on our needs, get to know each other, and understand each other’s likes and dislikes.
When this time is used in the right way, it creates an amazing foundation for a successful photo session that feels relaxed, personal, creative, and enjoyable.
RC Harris Water Treatment in Toronto offers an amazing setting for photography, especially for engagement and couples sessions. The stunning architecture provides a modern look with perfect leading lines that many photographers use in different ways, allowing for endless creative possibilities.

The Summer Engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment
Being located by the lake also offers stunning views, along with limited access to the small beach and the pier extending from the end of the treatment facility.
In addition, RC Harris Water Treatment is only a short walk from Silver Birch Off-Leash Dog Beach, which offers an amazing view of the Toronto skyline. At night, the CN Tower can be incorporated into nighttime photos or sunset views.
This section of the beach is much more accessible than the beach area directly at RC Harris Water Treatment. It provides beautiful opportunities for creative photos in the water or along the shoreline.
As we walked toward the main building at RC Harris Water Treatment, I could feel how strong the sun still was that day.
To create a more comfortable environment, we started working in the shaded area of the upper building at the water treatment facility. Here, I focused more on their connection and an intimate approach without incorporating the stunning views at this stage.
My goal was to connect as much as possible with my couple so that, once we moved into direct sunlight, we could spend less time exposed to the heat and create more successful images.
For both of them, this was their first time being professionally photographed, so it was a little stressful at first. Thanks to Meaghan’s planning process and preparation, I already knew what she liked, and she helped both Daniel and me relax while naturally guiding the session.
I was so happy that we were moving in the right direction.

Beach Photos at Golden hour at RC Harris Water Treatment
Slowly, I started bringing them into direct sunlight, showcasing the amazing lake views from the upper sections of the water treatment building.
We photographed on the large staircases connecting the different buildings, capturing the view from multiple angles and creating an amazing scene for their engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment.
When we arrived at the lower part of the treatment buildings, my favourite area, I was able to switch between back-lit and shaded areas within seconds. This allowed me to keep my couple engaged with both the beauty of the location and their connection with each other.
As we moved around the area, I noticed that no one entered our frame or appeared in the background. The entire location was available for us to create amazing engagement photos at RC Harris Water Treatment.
The small section of beach access from the stairs at RC Harris Water Treatment was an area I had not used before to the extent that we did during this photo session. As we walked all the way to the pier, the sunlight had become warm and golden, creating the beautiful yellow tones that appear just before sunset.
I knew we were going to continue to the neighbouring beach area, so instead of working in the water here, I noticed a large tree trunk lying in the tall grass near the entrance. Sheltered from the direct sunlight and beautifully backlit, it created an amazing setting that I had not discovered before.
Here, I captured some of the most intimate images of these two and created a feeling that, combined with the scenery and their emotions, was completely unique to my couple and their engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment.

Why Choose an Engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment?
I was so happy that we were able to work through almost three completely different lighting scenarios, making each image feel unique and different from the previous one. This allowed my couple to truly find their favourites from such a wide variety of photos
Once we finished photographing this part of the property, I noticed the sun was beginning to set, so I suggested my couple change into their second outfit.
Without wasting any time, both of them returned a few minutes later, excited to continue working in their new outfits.
This was the area that Meaghan had preferred the most, and the new outfit was also her favourite.
I intentionally saved this location and their second outfit for the end of the session. I knew they would be much more relaxed by this point, the light would be breathtaking, and there would be fewer people in the water, allowing us to create smooth images and, if needed, repeat some of my creative ideas by the lake.
Unlike the first part of the session, I photographed these images in a much more candid and natural way. Combined with the scenery, these moments did not require much staging or setup.

Sunset at The Beach in Toronto Engagement
While capturing these beach photos, I could see the joy in both of their eyes. Meaghan was fully embracing the experience, leaving me to simply follow them and choose the backgrounds I wanted to frame my couple.
From walking along the warm beach sand to stepping into the water, being lifted, and being twirled around, I could feel the energy continue to grow.
As we captured the final images of their engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment, the sun had already set. I decided to take a few sunset and nighttime photos before calling the session complete.
From the colourful sunset over the lake horizon to the breathtaking skyline with the CN Tower in the background, I knew I did not have to choose one option. We had enough time and complete control of the session, allowing us to capture everything.
After helping me work through the entire session, these final images felt like the cherry on top of the cake.
I asked them to remove their shoes and walk toward me, heading toward the park exit.
Walking backward while photographing, I was so happy to see that my couple was tired but incredibly excited after such an amazing photo session. They experienced a wide variety of lighting scenarios, beautiful scenery, and stunning views throughout the afternoon.
Their engagement at RC Harris Water Treatment was a true testament to a successful photo session in a location that offers endless possibilities, paired with a time of day that allows you to capture and work with a variety of lighting scenarios. These elements came together to create a gallery of beautiful imagery that showcased both the location and the couple’s connection.
