The holiday season sees a rise in family portraits and occasionally, you get the chance to do something special for someone or a group of people. Such was the case with my Christmas themed photo session with Trios College in Brampton, Ontario. My life experience has taught me to expect certain things from colleges, universities or training facilities but this blew me away. There was so much joy in the walls of Trios, directed currently by Martha Jansenberger who adds a great deal of the happiness within. Education doesn’t have to come at the price of fun, is what this experience taught me as the people at the school were less like classmates or pseudo-strangers and more like a large family. The inside jokes shared as children walked up to Santa’s knee or as students shared moments of laughter together.
There’s something magical about seeing the look in a child’s eyes as they see all the magic and wonder of a colorful and bright Christmas display. The pure wonder in the children’s eyes was enough fuel for me to want to shoot for hours on end. There’s something magical and filled with total innocence as a child walks into a room filled with decorations and their mouth hangs open and the corners of their mouth turn upwards as the smile inside starts spreading to their face. I knew this photo session would be special, but the way that each student and family stayed so present, needing only the presence of their loved ones to turn such a special moment into a memory left me in awe. I celebrate Christmas with my family each year and situations like this reminded me that you don’t have to celebrate Christmas to know and share the love which fuels it. The day definitely saw me going home and holding my loved ones tightly, as the students at the college proved that they were not just on their way into a great career, but leaving important impressions in the hearts of those around them.
I look forward to another photo session opportunity with Trios College and am incredibly grateful for what a beautiful day this opportunity turned into.
